Drawing is the way that I express myself. It is the way that I communicate. I am also prone to learn more about something if there are visuals supporting the narrative. With my drawings, I am able to release stress, anger, happiness, my every emotion into these images. At times, the more intense the emotion, the more detailed the drawing becomes and the more patterns I include. The repetition of lines, patterns and details are usually where I’ve somehow transported myself into the piece and am in essence, in a dream state. This repetition is also much like having a conversation through my pencil with the paper and other materials.
In order to explain my dreams and thoughts in detail, I chose to use graphite and/or ink to create my work, bringing attention to elements of the subject matter that may otherwise be missed. Sometimes I add color, if I feel that it will add to the emotional aspect of the piece or to be a companion to the subject. Some of my dreams are regulars. They revisit me, much like memories do. They may have a twist in the character, the monster, the place, etc. but they are familiar to me. A few of the monsters were frightening to me when younger but upon facing them, I have found that the more I create work the easier it became to minimize the fear.
I think that what I do share with my audience is the message of wonder, imagination, and hope. I want to show the audience the endless possibilities of this world beyond what we see every day. Dreams are not always meant to stay locked away in our sleep or in our closets.
The addition of architectural elements, perspective, etc. is a nod to my previous studies in architecture. It is my way of remaining connected to the drafting practice, as well as rendering.
